Sidewalk Chalk Art Competition
Calling All Chalk Artists!
The Hub on Canal 7th Annual Chalk It Up! Sidewalk Chalk Art Competition will be held Saturday, February 24, 2024, 9am to 4pm along Canal Street in New Smyrna Beach in conjunction with New Smyrna Beach Utilities, the Canal Street Historic District and the City of New Smyrna Beach. Chalk artists will create chalk masterpieces along Canal Street sidewalks.
Artist Registration
The first 50 registered artists will receive free chalk packs! Sidewalk spaces will be assigned on a first registered, first served basis.
Online registration begins October 1, 2023, and is free through 6 pm, Sunday, February 18, 2024.
On-site registration in person on the day of the event is $10 per artist and only available 8-9am, February 24, 2024. On-site registrations will be accepted as sidewalk space allows.
Rules and Guidelines
Chalk It Up! artist registrations will be accepted as sidewalk space allows. By submitting the online registration form, the artist acknowledges that he/she understands and agrees with the following:
Artwork Area Size
Each artwork area is 4 x 4 ft. Spaces will be assigned upon receipt of this online registration form. On-site in person registration fee is $10 in cash per artist as space allows.
Artwork Requirement
Only chalk and non-oil pastels in solid forms may be used for the contest. No other materials such as paint of any kind, markers, Sharpies, ink, Crayons, pencils, etc. are acceptable. No fixatives are allowed, except water-soluble hairspray.
Artwork Approval
All artwork must be appropriate for public viewing. No words or symbols intended as advertising may appear within the artwork. No copyright-protected images or commercial advertising will be accepted (exceptions made for the Business Artist Category.) No obscene, political or racist imagery or words are allowed. The Hub on Canal reserves the right to solely decide appropriateness.
Release of Intellectual Property
By participating in the 7th Annual Chalk It Up! Sidewalk Chalk Art Competition, the artist allows the use of images of himself/herself and his/her artwork to be included, during and after the event, including, but not limited to, sponsor websites, print media and social media outlets.
Artist Release
The artist, by signing, will release and forever discharge The Hub on Canal, New Smyrna Beach Utilities, Canal Street Historic District, The City of New Smyrna Beach, and all sponsoring organizations and their directors, employees and volunteers from any responsibility, personal liability, claims, losses, injury, or damage arising out of or in conjunction with participation in the 7th Annual Chalk It Up! Sidewalk Chalk Art Competition.
Judges and Officials
During the Chalk It Up! event, judges and officials can disqualify artists for failure to adhere to the guidelines.
Artist Liaisons
Artist Liaisons will be available to help artists find their sidewalk spaces; locate restrooms, water and snacks; take photos; and answer questions throughout the day.
Rain or Inclement Weather
In the event of rain or inclement weather, the competition will be canceled by 9am, February 24, 2024, for the safety of all. No rain date is scheduled.
Awards and Prizes
Monetary awards will be given in all categories except Business and Elementary School Team competition. All artists in non-Business and non-Elementary School Team categories are eligible for prize money. The winners of the Business category and Elementary School Team competition will receive traveling trophies. Additional gifts will be awarded in special art categories. The number of prizes and prize amounts are based on the number of competition entries.
Artist Categories
Professional Artist (in any medium) – 18 yrs and older
Hint: If you have made money from selling your art, you are a professional artist.
Amateur Adult Artist – 18 yrs and older
Amateur Artist – 14-17 yrs
Amateur Artist – 10-13 yrs
Amateur Artist – 5-9 yrs
Duo Family Artists – adult and child under 12 yrs
Business
Artwork Option Suggestions
Original art — your own creation
Photograph — must show the photo to be reproduced and credit the photographer.
Masterpiece — name the artwork and credit the artist.
Conservation — artwork has a conservation theme.
Event Schedule on Saturday, February 24
8 - 9am
Event sign-in and on-site registration at The Hub on Canal, 132 Canal Street.
Pre-registered artists sign in.
On-site registration is $10 per person, accepted as sidewalk space allows.
9am - 3pm
Artists create their chalk masterpieces.
3pm - 4pm
Judging period.
4pm
Awards ceremony outside The Hub at the corner of Canal and Magnolia Streets.
The Hub on Canal is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization bringing the arts to the New Smyrna Beach and Edgewater communities.
